I too was in the Navy in the 1950s. I was stationed on the lead ship (the USS Bairoko, CVE-115) during the test period (January through May 1954). I witnessed the detonation of what we were told was four A-bombs and one H-bomb. As I recall, we were not told we had an option for this assignment.
I am certainly not disputing Mr. Bell’s recollection at all. I just don’t recall any increase in my pay or benefits and am wondering if I have some back pay coming?
